Loma Prieta Earthquake Stories

I was at work at a restaurant in Sacramento during the quake. I am from Wisconsin, and had never experienced a quake before, and what I felt I’m sure is no comparison to what the people in the bay area felt.

I was sitting at the break table and my friend was reading the newspaper over my shoulder. All of a sudden, she bumped into me. I asked her why she did that and she said she lost her footing and told me to look at the light fixtures hanging from the ceiling. They were swaying back and forth. She said to me “You just experienced your first earthquake. Welcome to California!” I replied “Now I have to wait for the riots, fires and mudslides for my experience to be complete.”

I had no idea the quake was centered so far away from Sacramento. I was scared for the people in the Bay area, and could not believe the devistation. I was humbled by the plight of the people there, and will never forget it as long as I can remember it.
